How did some of the essential foods for millions of people, such as manioc, pineapple, potatoes, pupunha, corn and açaí, come about? Among the various myths shared by the indigenous peoples of South America that explain the origin of plants cultivated in the Amazon, one of them - told by the Piapoco people - has just arrived in Brazil in book form. It's Kaaliawiri, the Tree of Life, by Francisco Ortiz and Ciça Fittipaldi, published by Editora ÔZé.
The story, passed down orally from generation to generation, was told by the leader of the Piapoco people, Freddy Rojas, to Ortiz, who is an ethnologist and founder of Etnollano, an organization that has been accompanying processes of autonomy and government in communities of the eastern plains in Colombia and the Amazon for 40 years. The two met in Coayare, a community on the lower Guaviare River, in Los Llanos, near the border between Colombia, Brazil and Venezuela.
